Lockdown is a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of this deadly virus from one person to another, to protect ourselves and others. Amidst the pandemic, the common emotion faced by all is fear. Staying at home can also make us anxious, irritated, helpless and panicky. In this context, UPES conducted a webinar to confront the COVID-19 conundrum of exams, placements and online learning. Malini Shah, a practicing psychologist, Co-Founder and Senior Counsellor/Behavioural Trainer at AasthaChrysalis shares some tips to deal with stress and anxiety. Excerpts:

How to occupy yourself
Though, staying at home can be restricting, there are some ways to keep you positive and cheerful all day long. Lockdown period is the time where we can build on new skills and enhance the existing ones. Doing some of the household chores can be of great help. You can keep yourself occupied by listening to music, reading, watching an entertaining programme on television. If you had old hobbies like painting, reading, dancing, singing, gardening or stitching, go back to them.
How to stay happy
At times of anxiety, practice breathing slowly for a few minutes. Your thoughts play a vital role in keeping yourself contented and tension-free. Try and distance the negative thoughts that are making you anxious. Think of something calm, serene, and relax your mind. Helping others can make you feel better. Indulge yourself in some sort of physical activity. Indoor exercises like Zumba or yoga can be beneficial. Consider listing out things you are thankful for. A sense of hope, accepting changes and resilience is important to keep happy and going.
How to stay focussed?
Maintaining a fixed routine is extremely important for your mental health. In addition to sticking to a regular bedtime routine, keep consistent times for meals, work or study schedules, and physical activity. Also set aside time for activities that you enjoy. Try turn off electronic devices for some time every day, including 30 minutes before bedtime. You should make an effort to spend less time in front of a screen and limit the usage of social media channels.
How to deal with anger, frustration and loneliness
If you are feeling angry or irritated, calm your mind by doing some deep breathing exercises. A feeling of loneliness and depression is also quite common amongst youngsters. You can deal with this by staying connected with your friends and family. Connect with your near and dear ones whom you have not spoken to for a long time. Discuss happy events, common interests, share music and exchange ideas.
If these emotions persist continuously, it is absolutely fine to talk to someone. A close friend, elder sibling, counsellor, or a therapist.
Apart from this, leading psychologist Malini Shah shared some nutrition tips for students. Simple exercises like jogging, brisk walk is necessary and should be done regularly. Packaged and oily foods should be avoided as they have a negative impact on your health. One should also eat a lot of fresh fruits. Eating healthy and wholesome foods can increase your productivity and help you stay focussed.
